The technical workforce pyramid.

At the apex of the pyramid are the scientists and engineers who perform basic and applied research by formulating and testing hypotheses. Almost always, a Ph.D. in a scientific or engineering discipline from a university graduate school is required as the foundation for independent research. The number of workers trained and the number of positions available at this level is quite small. The next level represents the engineers who design and develop processes and instrumentation based on the fundamental work of the scientists. Depending on the complexity of the design work, most workers at this level have an M.S. or Ph.D. degree in a technical discipline. A significantly larger number of people work at this level of the pyramid, but the numbers are still relatively small.

The analysis level of the pyramid includes research and data analysts, computer programmers, and others who use, but do not develop, technical processes and tools. Most of the workers at this level are either at a graduate student assistant level or have a technical college degree. Whether or not an M.S. degree is required depends on the specialization of the technical work. The number of people trained and the number of available workforce positions at this level is much higher. At the base of the pyramid are the operators who run and/or maintain the equipment or processes, use the output of previous analyses as a small part of their job, or support those above them in the pyramid. Quite often, supplementary technical training in a community college or technical school is the only requirement to use a particular technology at this level, and this level comprises the vast majority of the national technical workforce.

The key to a successful education, training, and workforce development program is to attract the appropriate number of people to be trained at levels that match both their abilities and the number of available jobs at those levels. Fortunately, astronomy is an extremely powerful stimulus for attracting students. The mysteries of the universe and the excitement of space exploration are of great interest to many students who will consider making astronomy or space science a career. Because astronomy is a multidisciplinary science, students who have an interest in the space sciences will study mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering in addition to astronomy. Thus, even if astronomy is not the final career choice for a student, studying astronomy will serve as a very important catalyst in creating a highly qualified workforce for a large cadre of technical occupations. Furthermore, well-funded and publicized astronomy programs in the U.S. attract international students who often remain here to work in technical careers in American companies.

How to find windows version, build number etc.?

Once, when I was not too much familiar with windows operating systems' advance uses I found problem to know my OS's version number. After a lengthy search into different technical support forum I was able to find out a quick solution. This is just for information to the users who are new to windows operating systems. Here are the steps you can follow:

[1] Click on "start" and run "regedit" command, it should open your window registry.
[2] Navigate to the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

[3] On the right panel, you will find the key CurrentBuildNumber.The value of this key is your Windows Build Number. Then find a key called CurrentVersion and its value is your windows version i.e. the version of your windows vista, windows xp, etc. You will also find keys called EditionID and ProductId to know the windows edition and product id.

The key BuildLabEx containd build number and revision number.For example, in the value 6001.17387.x86fre.vistasp1_gdr.070927-1921, the first four digits stand for build number i.e. 6001 and the next five digits stand for windows revision number i.e. 17387. x86 tells you that you are running a 32-bit operating system.
so, whenever you want to find the Windows Version or Build Number, follow the steps outlined above to determine the same.

Citizens' Band Radio in India: How frequently we use it?

I never used a CB radio for communication purpose, and now we are so obsessed (Top 43 signs you are obsessed with your cell phone) with our cell phone that we don't even care if it exists. What is a CB or Citizens' Band Radio? In India, it is a simplest radio communications between individuals on a selection of 40 channels within the 27 MHz (11 meter) band.

Unlike HAM radio (see my last post) it does not require any license to operate at designated bands. It is always better if you take a look into WPC's remarks in National Frequency Allocation Table. As far as I know there is no limitations on subjects we discuss over CB radio but interestingly all channels are open and others can hear you if they are tuned into same frequency band; it is important when you are hiking or doing some other activities like high altitude mountaineering or during rescue operations. In CB radio based communication channels work in shared basis, if someone transmitting over a particular channel you need to wait until the channel becomes free. HAM radio: has the time finally come for me to fulfill my dream?

Dear reader, as I've written above that I love writing but these days I'm too much busy preparing for A.S.O.C examination. Amateur Station Operators' Certificate examination is the first step towards become a HAM. Sometimes it is hard to see people around us know nothing about this hobby, for example one of my colleagues patted me on my back saying it will be nice to hear me as RJ on air, oops!

Ham radio is just a serious hobby and hams do not get a single penny out of it, if you want to listen to them you need to become a short wave listener or a ham. People interested in radio communication technology, electronics circuitry, DX-pedition, CW communication, helping people during emergency etc. take ham radio as their hobby, hams frequently check-into nets and discuss on various topics. I became interested in ham radio during my college days when I was a student of communication engineering.

EM and Antenna theory were two of my most favorite subjects as an UG student in B.I.E.T; my score card did not reflect that, though. Some people say antennas are very mysterious things that human ever built, antenna is our another eye to see a different world which is not visible through ordinary eyes, it is a tool to create disturbances in cosmic ocean and we use antenna to hear them too. At AT&T Bell Labs in New Jersey, a young radio engineer named Karl Jansky (Father of Radio Astronomy) discovered radio frequency emission from the center of our milky way galaxy on 1933, the signal is strongest in the constellation of Sagittarius. Now the science community has a map of such invisible (no visible light wave emission but radio waves) quasars and pulsars. Our own Sun is a rich source of radio and microwave (Screams from the Sun?). Radio astronomy and amateur radio have close relations between them since beginning.

I've seen hams who are just interested to communicate people far away with their home-brewed radio communication apparatus just to see how minimal power consumption could be possible to make such communications; they work on different types of antenna, use different modulation techniques, tactically use ionosphere or the moon as reflector, track satellites and make satellite communications etc.

Indian hams are always active in relief and disaster management activities, some of their recent relief works are reported below. If you are also interested in ham radio ham community is always there to help you. But don't be afraid of learning Morse Code, it is old but gold (winking).

How did I lose 10 Kilogram within 2 months?

Obesity is the most discussed topic among today's youngsters. As we all know that the human lifestyle has been effected by IT revolution more than anything else. I'm an employee of an electronic design automation company and I know how hard it was to control my growing weight everyday. But why we just can't control it? The answer is we actually don't want to; yes it's true. So, the first step towards fitness is, we need a strong will power and the mentality to hold it for ever.

My 12 Kilogram overweight gave me [1] backache, [2] sluggishness, [3] heart problems, [4] digestion malfunctions and [5] prone to get sick with seasonal and minor diseases.

At first I thought I have no time for physical exercises, and I will waste my valuable time if I go for it instead I better concentrate on my work and do well in my professional career. I know, more than 90% of obese think the same. They like to spend time with their work, their family and friends, their hobbies etc. But at the end of June, 2009 suddenly I realized if I am not physically fit everything in my life will be unfit as well. I started the gym on 30th June, 2009 when I was 79.4 Kilogram and on August 15, 2009 69.5 Kilogram, I lost almost 10 Kilogram of my body weight within these days.

But how did I do this so quickly without making any harm to my body? Three "mantras" I am describing here,
[1] Strong will power: Make gym as a part of your "must do" jobs in your daily routine, whatever happens do not miss your time to go to gym and spend at least one hour exercising under your instructor's supervision.

[2] Change your taste: We Indians are habituated with spicy, sweet and other heavy calorie foods. STOP eating these completely, say to your mind "NO" whenever it wishes to take even a tiny bite. If you can't control your calorie intake then there is nothing in this world which can help you in weight reduction. This is as simple as mathematics, Your actual weight + Your daily weight gain - Your daily weight loss= Your weight. You don't have any control on your actual weight if you want to stay healthy but you have control on other two parameters, your daily weight gain and your daily weight loss.

[3] Run: Run as much you as can. I started running even when I was not able to run for 30 seconds, and now I run 10K in 1 hour, we all can do the same, we just need strong will power to achieve the goal and nothing else. Running and drinking lots of water can give us everything that we need to stay healthy.

Remember, there is no other shortcut to reduce weight without damaging your body, fasting is the worst way to do it. Listen to your instructor, they are trained and follow his advices strictly. All the best.

Brahmacharya! The most important part of a successful spiritual life.

I had a question in my mind, how to follow "brahmacharya" uninterruptedly? Yes it is hard to start complete celibacy but I think it is not impossible. Recently I came across a article in http://www.vijaykumar.org/ and I want to share this with you. Thanks to Mr. Vijay Kumar, who explained the fact thoroughly.

The question was, I want to follow brahmacharya. But i am not able to do that due to night fall. I had initially some bad habit masturbation. I am also practicing Yoga but not able to follow brahmacharya vrata.

And answer from Vijay Kumar is as follows:

You do not dwell in thoughts of celibacy (aka Brahmacharya Vrata) which is a prerequisite for following the path of Brahmacharya! Celibacy Brahmacharya cannot be followed half-heartedly. It needs to be practiced in totality! Unless one understands the meaning of celibacy, Brahmacharya Vrata, Yoga... meditation... you would not gain much in your spiritual pursuit of life.

Following the path of celibacy commands that we treat all womenfolk world over as our mothers, sisters or daughters! There can never be a fourth relationship with any woman if we truly desire following the path of Brahmacharya Vrata... celibacy! It truly is difficult but not impossible. Before we indulge further on the subject of Brahmacharya celibacy... we need to understand the meaning of celibacy.

Brahmacharya celibacy can never be followed in words and deeds only. It needs to be followed in thoughts also. A single thought of any woman during night time can result in sweet dreams (night fall)... something undesirable on the path of spirituality! To remove all thoughts related to womenfolk even from our dreams we need to treat every woman existing on Mother Earth either as our mother, sister or daughter!

This practice needs to be followed not literally but in totality! Even a single error would land us in jeopardy. God Almighty allocates a particular quota of energy to every man and woman every month. Some destroy this cosmic energy through masturbation... others while it away in unnecessary sexual indulgences! Why lose the precious quota of energy destined to mankind every month.

It is this quota of energy when maintained and preserved for a minimum of 12 years results in full awakening of the Kundalini and the incumbent finally reaching the stage of enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and salvation (moksha) in this very life! In absence of proper practice of celibacy... no human being can guarantee traveling the spiritual path in right earnestness.

Masturbation in itself is never bad. But excessive indulgence in masturbation leads to physical weakening which youngsters may not realize... but the cosmic truth can never be belied! Highly successful people... are not sexually disinclined... they rather transmute this precious cosmic energy into channels that lead straight to their goal of life!

If we ever think of reaching the goal of life... we need to preserve this quota of energy ordained by God Almighty to every human being month after month! Celibacy Brahmacharya is never about spirituality alone... to be successful in life we need practice celibacy Brahmacharya Vrata absolutely voluntary and without preconditions.

The celibacy mantra demands highest level of spiritual practice! Treating all womenfolk as our mother, sister or daughter is extremely difficult... but not impossible to practice! Not even 1% people world over are able to practice celibacy Brahmacharya Vrata in totality! It is only one in a million who stands out and boldly announces having reached the goal of life! It is these people who make life meaningful and worthy of living!

You state you practice yoga and also meditation. You fail to understand that yoga in Hindi is termed as meditation in English. We need to understand the meaning of yoga meditation in totality! Yoga meditation does not mean sitting in a closed dark room with a small lit bulb in the center! Yoga meditation means synthesis... the effort of the soul atman to merge with God Almighty... the supreme soul at the earliest!

Yoga in English is derived from Yog in Hindi. Yog in Hindi stands for synthesizing two things together! The effort of our soul atman to liberate itself forever from the cycle of birth and death and reach the kingdom of God (aka Baikuntha in Hinduism) is termed as Yog in Hindi. In simple words two Yog two equals four!

Nothing in the spiritual domain needs to be practiced ritually and without understanding the basic concepts therein! The prime reason why most people never gain enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) in their lifetime! Going to the temples, churches or mosques carry no meaning! If we truly desire meeting God one-day... we need to practice absolute celibacy Brahmacharya Vrata... the only path to gaining enlightenment and salvation!

Involuntary or forced celibacy does not serve any purpose in life! Many religious institutions advocate and impart practicing involuntary celibacy! Such institutions... their teachings never truly understand the meaning of celibacy... leave alone practicing it! Swami Vivekananda truly practiced absolute celibacy Brahmacharya Vrata!

Swami Vivekananda... the famous disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa was absolutely clear about everything in life! He was never after gaining enlightenment and salvation in his lifetime. Neither did he gain enlightenment or salvation in his life! He was a true symbol and advocate of community upliftment. He wanted to help the poor... the downtrodden denizens of the society!

He made it absolutely clear to Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa... his spiritual master guru that he kept the benefit of the community above all. His every effort in life was always for the benefit of the community... never otherwise! He was the best orator the world has ever seen! He never minced words lest the people judge him wrongly!

In the earlier stages of his life, Swami Vivekananda wanted to see and meet God in this very life! The moment his Guru... the spiritual master Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa made him see God Almighty... he refused pursuing God as the goal of his life! Had he pursued enlightenment and salvation as the goal of life... he would have worked for the benefit of one lone individual... which was contrary to his ideals as he wanted to work for the masses!

In principle... decide why we want to pursue the path of absolute celibacy... Brahmacharya Vrata! The moment the goal of life becomes clear... it is not difficult to follow the path of celibacy Brahmacharya Vrata in totality! The moment I truly understood the meaning of celibacy and Brahmacharya Vrata... gaining self realization was not far behind! My Kundalini awakened fully absolutely unknown to me.

Why shout proud to be Indian?

In many websites especially in youtube I can see if a Indian saw something good related to India or its people or even NRIs, leaves a comment and a common sentence will be "Proud to be Indian". Recently I have seen a nice reply after this comment, "Are you just trying to convince your insecure selves that you're proud of being Indian because you really are not?"

I am optimistic though. Chhagan Bhujbal is now deputy chief minister of Maharastra, he replaced R R Patil who was in headline for his controversial comment over 26/11. Are we seeing any changes in our system after 26/11, or after unforeseen public protest against politicians in India? I don't think so.
The typical Indian mentality is, political leaders should have some criminal background (Police case against him! as was during freedom struggle?), he/she should have to move from one party to another in time to time basis and so on.
Chhagan Bhujbal started his political career with shiv sena, then Indian National Congress and then Sharad Power's Nationalist Congress Party, meanwhile he was looking for opportunities in Laloo's RJD and “Behenji's” (read Mayawati) Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). His name came under Telgi scam and for corruption in the police force.
If same procure continues, in next election people like R R Patil or B Deshmukh can occupy CM's chair once again and Mumbai has to face 26/11 again and again.

Terror prob and Kolkata/West Bengal

Left front is notorious for preventing all progressive steps taken by Govt. of India, as far as I believe as a bengali staying outside of west bengal. My colleagues from all over India ask me how can we (literate bengalis?) keep electing CP(I)M to rule us over past 30 years? Honestly saying, they left no choice for us.
People still believes situation in WB is far better than UP and Bihar, but I want to ask a question in this context, how many people knows exactly whats going on inside china? Day to day basis? Are they really a superpower? Don't know. States ruled by communists are almost same.
Chinese communists are desperately working for their nation, but can we say the same for Indian communists? I have seen CP(I)M gathers thousand of people when US attacks Iraq to protest march but there is no sound when Mumbai and the whole nation were burning after 26/11. Since 1971 Indo-Pak war communist party allows millions of Bangladeshi immigrants inside west bengal to create their vote bank. Presently TMC (Trinamul Congress) started similar cheap political game in west bengal against state govt. Kolkata is safest corridor for terrorists from Bangladesh and Pakistan, they are protected by ruling party for minority votes.
Proof? All terror attacks linked to Kolkata, and an ancient mosque on a tiny patch of 1,200 square feet of land right next to a runway has forced a redrawing of the entire Rs 2,000-crore map to upgrade Kolkata airport. So called secular leaders blame Narendra Modi as communal and this Narendra Modi government’s drive against temples encroaching streets in Gujarat capital and elsewhere has invited the wrath of the opposition Congress (read seculars) and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) alike.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visiting India, yesterday John McCain, republican party leader made a stopover India on his way of Bangladesh and Bhutan to show US's solidarity with us. Rice will visit Pakistan too. Mr. McCain said we should trust Pakistan. President elect. Barack Obama clearly mentioned he will not give any specific comment on present condition in subcontinent, and also saying India must protect itself.

What US wants? If India and Pakistan go into war, they can sell their arms! it may help to boost their economy. We should not forget that God of terrorism Osama bin Laden is a American creature.

Pakistani president Mr. Zardari clearly said Pakistan will not send anyone from 21 blacklisted men in India. Pakistan Foreign Minister promised they will send ISI chief Lt Gen Shuja Pasha to India when he was in a official tour in India, but now, when he is in Pakistan denying to send ISI chief . Pakistan Govt. knows they can't be too strong or too soft because of Internal and International pressure. Pakistan Foreign Minister Mr. Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi repeatedly said Pakistan is a responsible nation and will act as a responsible neighbor.

Are you showing your responsibility?

On the other hand India has too many options to choose but not even a single option will help it until India remodel its administrative, legal, internal security systems.We may have an organization like DRDO but at the same time our police dies due to faulty, poor quality bullet proof jackets; state police still use .303 rifles, lack of coordination between spy agencies, porous territorial borderline. It is far more cheaper to upgrade our own system than going into a war. Another victory over Pakistan will not ensure the security of citizens inside the country.

Prevention is better than cure.

This was most discussed topic in west bengal during 2002 when Indian Mujahideen attacked American Center In Kolkata. One police man pull the trigger of his .303 rifle but it did not fire and the police man died in counter attack by militants.

Our defense ministry should really think on it. Why they allow these 2nd world war rifle in this 21 century when terrorists got most advanced weapons.
